Joe Eng, 76, of Wilmington, died Monday, February 2, 2009 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Beloved by all who knew him, both new acquaintances and old friends, Joe is survived by his wife Sara; daughters Elizabeth and Emily; their husbands, David and Jeremy; and four grandchildren, Evan, Theo, Riley, and Amy.

Joe was an active member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.

He retired from the US Army as a Lt. Col. in 1974 and then resided in Tucson, AZ where he earned a Ph.D. in Chinese History and touched the lives of many students and faculty. Later, he became an investigator for the Legal Defender of Pima County. More recently, he served as a
Stephen Minister, sharing his compassionate nature with those in great need.

He always loved meeting new people and adored children and
animals.

His roaring laugh and wide smile will be forever dear.

The family is planning a celebration of his life to be held at a later date.

    We were so sorry to read of Joe's death in the newspaper. He was such a terrific guy and we enjoyed knowing him when we lived in Wilmington.

    I was so saddened to see Joe's picture on the obituary page. His obituary was succinct, but fit him perfectly. It was my pleasure to know Joe when he worked at Measurement, Inc. I didn't know him well, but I admired and respected him. I loved his laugh and good nature. He always gave any of us who were in his company an uplift. I never saw him any way but happy and pleasant. I wish I had had time to ask him some questions about China and, in particular, about Charlie Soong (I can't remember how to spell that last name). I, too, am a Methodist and read a book loaned to me by my minister about the Soong family and its connection to this area. I am so sorry for your loss, but I'm sure your good memories of him are a comfort. Jane Martin

    We did not know your husband but we attend the Wilmington Concert Series and for years you and your husband either sat a few rows in front of us or behind us. During intermission he would always speak to us, just saying hello. We often mentioned that he seemed to be a very nice person. We offer our sympathy. Dick and Linda Chapman

    Dear Sara We shared a tour of the State Port with you and Joe a couple of years ago. It was through UNCW and led by Wilbur Jones. We had a very enjoyable day sharing the van. We are sorry for your loss.
