Bobby Glenn Luther 71, of Wilmington died Tuesday January 3, 2012 at his home.

Bobby was born in Asheville, NC on March 22, 1940. Mr. Luther Joined Temple Baptist Church at a very early age. He was faithful and continuous member of both Temple Baptist and St. Pauls Episcopal Church until his health declined. Mr. Luther spent all of his life being an avid train and animal lover. For many years, he worked and retired from Textilease were he meet many friends and acquaintances. Bobby had a vibrant spark that attracted everyone. His sweet personality did not allow him to meet any strangers, who were always enlightened about his love of trains and his “Miss Cindy.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Lee and Frances Sloan Luther, his grandfather, Robert C. Sloan and a very special friend, Betty Aranow.

He leaves to cherish his fond memories: His baby, “Miss Cindy”; his cousins, Joseph Sloan of West Palm Beach, Fla., William Sloan (Ann Marie) of Pensacola, Fla. and Robert Sloan (Lori) of Wilmington, NC., a special loved one, Camesha L. Richardson and her son, Ian; devoted friends, John Morton and The Musser Family; special caregivers, Jessica Julian, Pamela Kelley, Jackie Brown and Ebony Butcher and a host of other friends

“Thank You” is really not enough to convey our feelings to you, our many friends and acquaintances, but since we can only do it in words at this time, from the very depths of our hearts, we say, “Thank You” for just sharing, caring, visiting, calling, your many many prayers and being there when we needed you. Funeral service 11:00 AM Friday January 6, 2012 at Temple Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.

The family will see friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday evening at Wilmington Funeral Chapel.

    Bobby was very faithful in his church attendance and activities at St. Paul's. His viewpoint on things was unique and he was interested in many things. It will be strange to not see him at church. He will be missed.

    Mr. Bobby was such a special and much-loved man. I enjoyed spending time with him on visits and I certainly miss him. I can't adequately express how much admiration I have for Camesha, Ian, and the wonderful family of friends and caregivers who cared for Mr. Bobby. I've no doubt that he's gleefully conducting a train in Heaven.

    Many, many times Bobby would walk to the church, knock on the door and just want to visit and eat some candy in the candy dish on my desk. Bobby was a gentle soul and will be missed. RIP Bobby!

    Yes! Bobby was a definate animal lover and I could see that the first time I met him. Many, many years ago he adopted my little dog. I had never parted with a pet before and bobby came highly recommended by our veternarian. He let me come and visit my dog and I knew that he was now having a much better living situation. He seemed to be the king of the castle. I've always remembered Bobby and Betty for their kindness and love!

    We moved next door to Bobby in December of 1977 as newlyweds. It did not take us long to get to know Bobby as a neighbor. He made us aware of his presence by speaking to us when he would see us and "striking up" a conversation whenever we were outside or going to our vehicles to leave the house. His mother, when she was alive, was equally as friendly as he was. Many of these conversations would take place on the side of the porch when our porch was being swept, washed down, or we were doing the yard. Recently, he'd come to our front door to have his mail "read" or explained, if he did not understand it. His evening strolls seemed enjoyable to him, but we could see him getting "tired" as he aged and his walks were not as long and energetic as they used to be. He was a decent neighbor and his presence in the neighborhood will be remembered and will serve to remind us of him as a long time resident of this block.
