Barry Hugh Gottehrer, 73, a resident of the Landfall community died Friday April 11, 2008 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCareCenter.

Barry was born on January 25, 1935 in the Bronx of New York and was President and CEO, of Gottehrer and Company a Washington government consulting Firm.

Surviving are his wife of 35 years Patricia Gottehrer of the home, His daughter Andrea Kling and husband James Kling of Denver Co.; Son Kevin Gottehrer and wife Heather Gottehrer of Charlotte; grandson Hayden Gottehrer of Charlotte ;granddaughter Ariel Passarelli of Denver Co.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 A.M Tuesday April 15, 2008 at St. Therese Catholic Church with Father Walter Ospina officiating.

    I first met Barry in 1966 when I was a staff assistant in the NYC office of Sen. Robert Kennedy and grew to know him well when I became an assistant to John Lindsay (69-73). I have many warm and funny memories of 2:00am pizzas admidst total chaos and all night sessions roaming the city while dealing with that day's crisis. I was very sadened to read of his passing in todays NY Times. I lost touch with Barry in the 1980's when I moved to Maine and was very surprised to find that for at least the last few years we have been living around the corner from each other in Landfall (although I still commute to my office in Boston during the week). What a missed opportunity for me! Barry was one of the most dedicated and interesting people I've ever known. I wish that I had realized he was just around the corner at the other end of Landfall. My deepest condolences to his family. he will be missed by many. Jack Bush

    I spoke with Barry while researching the Five Percenters, a movement of predominantly African-American youth that began in 1960s Harlem. Barry worked with these young people to provide access to educational and recreational programs. During times of potential riots, Barry's positive relationship with the Five Percenters proved instrumental in keeping New York streets calm. He did his work with courage and compassion, and contributed greatly to a special city at a special time in history. He seemed to enjoy sharing his memories of those years. I definitely enjoyed hearing them. Respect and peace to Barry, and deepest condolences to his family.

    Mr. Gottehrer and his family have been close friends to me and my family since Kevin and I were 5 years old at the Field Club of Longmeadow and we went on a rafting trip together. Over the years, Mr. Gottehrer was incredibly supportive personally and professionally, and launched hundreds of careers, mine twice - both in DC and Los Angeles. I am so sorry for this loss and continue to keep the growing Gottehrer family in my thoughts.

    The brief time that we and the Archers were able to spend with Barry earlier this spring will be a most pleasant memory that we will keep for a very long time. His grace and humor in the face of such a grim physical outlook struck me very personally. I about it often. Barry was a dear man, and he was so fortunate to have had such an interesting life -- and you at his side during those years and throughout your mutual ordeal. May God bless you.
